Rolling into the holidays of 2009 – 2010, we find ourselves taking a fresh look at many aspects of the marketplace. Some say our financial future is bleak, that the dollar is taking a hit as the Federal Reserve dumps huge amounts of new currency into the market.
A diluted dollar weakens the value of everything we own, particularly imports we have become dependent upon, such as manufactured goods, oil and other commodities. All this translates into higher costs for transport, even of domestic goods to our markets and beyond. We all pay that increase at the checkout stand. How much are we willing to tolerate?
Worldwide, I would argue in favor of the American in terms of competitive quality and production standards. We will out produce and out think virtually any other nation on an average day. What we see coming from the emergent economies of Asia is that which we have helped design, fund and influence in many ways – economically and culturally.
We may seem to be China’s best friend and market. Yet We must also be on guard to be her toughest competitor as with all nations. I see China practicing much of what we preach. And why don’t we heed our own advice, or that of China’s recently when they ask us to take positive steps to strengthen our Dollar? We have become the adolescent again.
As we focus on currency devaluation and even in the worst case – harmonization, or a new “world” reserve currency as some are determined to implement, I will still bet on the American worker, scientist, engineer, architect, and entrepreneur regardless what central bank issues the paper. We are our own worst enemy, and must practice old fashioned frugality some used to call “horse sense”. Even a horse knows when to go to the barn.
A friend who spent his early years growing up as a military brat in Okinawa and served in Asia during the early 1970’s told me about Bhat chains. Cool idea. Rather than buy coins, people in Thailand buy high grade 22kt gold chains weighted in ounce and half ounce. Why chains? Because chains are easier to conceal than coins that bounce around and make noise when running from some invading army. That’s like horse sense!
